"Deep clean" gets used as if a home has a single timer, but different parts of the house wear at very different rates. A kitchen used nightly asks for far more than a spare bedroom. Here is a realistic timetable that keeps a Malaysian household comfortable without turning cleaning into a second job.
Weekly: the high-traffic zones
Kitchen surfaces, the hob and bathrooms genuinely benefit from a weekly going-over. In our climate, bathrooms in particular start showing mould and watermarks quickly if left longer. A weekly reset keeps the build-up from ever getting a foothold.
Monthly: the details
Once a month, step past the routine. Wipe inside the microwave, descale the kettle, clean the range hood filter, and dust the spots you normally skim — tops of cabinets, skirting, door frames and light fittings. This is also a good moment to wash the aircon filters, which clog fast in dusty urban areas.
Quarterly: the big reset
Every three months or so, a proper deep clean pays off: degreasing the oven, clearing inside cabinets and the fridge, scrubbing grout, and detailing windows and tracks. Households with pets, young children or heavy cooking may want this closer to every two months.
Twice a year: soft furnishings and services
Sofas, mattresses, rugs and curtains hold onto dust and humidity, and a professional extraction clean every six months keeps them fresh and extends their life. It is also a sensible cadence for a full aircon service, which improves both air quality and running costs.
Reading your own home
Treat these as starting points, not rules. A quiet two-person condo can stretch the intervals; a bustling family home with a home-cooked dinner every night should tighten them. The honest test is simple — if a task feels overdue, it probably is.
If mapping all of this onto a calendar sounds like effort in itself, a recurring plan folds the weekly and monthly work into a standing visit, and we simply flag when a quarterly deep clean is due.
